A notch is derived from old French word osche, which means an indentation or incision on an edge or surface. The developers thought that they need to use the space which is empty at top of the touchscreen by that way notch display in mobile technology arrived. A normal phone without the notch display looks like this.
The rounded portion is space normally left unused since we have 5 to 6″ phone but the space of certain region is unused. The developers thought that leaving the ear-piece area all rest part of the phone touch screen must be a usable area.
Notch screen offers the ability to retain the space which is left near the ear-piece. First this method introduced in iPhone X they utilized that space by displaying Date, time, battery percentage, tower.
The notch display in mobile is a outcome of two trends.
1. First, the mobile companies shifted towards minimal bezels. Let me give you a small intro about bezels. The term bezel is used to describe the outside frame of any computing device such as the monitor. It used to evaluate the perimeter of the device and for ramifications. In new iPad, they have extremely narrow bezels allowing more screen and this has become a much more important design factor for consumers.
The electronic items such that phones, tablets use this design to avoid the unintentional inputs in the touch so that the consumer can use is the freeway. We can see in some smartphones we have an empty area in the top and bottom if we touch that area nothing would happen those areas are given to ignore the inputs and the user can rest in the finger on it (you can see the 1st image rounded portions).
2. The second thing is the phone makers thought of shifting to a taller screen with 18:9 aspect ratio. So they thought they can remove the bezel, if the bezel was removed there would be no space for hardware component like front cam, for ear-piece and sensors. And these sensors should be connected directly to the main circuit board.
Then the smart-phone makers left with only two option like they need to stop reducing bezel thickness and leave enough space for hardware. or else cut a part of the display for keeping the hardware parts.
So now we can see what are the benefits of having a notch screen in a mobile.
Benefit of Notch display
The main benefit of having notch display is as I said to you before is a space saver. When we have a phone like Note 8 a 6.3″ display smartphone we feel a discomfort in handling.
That’s where the notch screen plays a vital role and using that everyone has moved/moving to 18:9 aspect ratio since all the user need a big screen but not a big phone. The phones like iPhone X having a 5.8” display and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 will give a better feel in watching.
The goal of the notch display in mobile is to give a user experience a realistic feel and that what Apple did in iPhone X and got back a positive reply from the users.
Another creative design given by Apple, they used OLED(organic light-emitting diode) panel on iPhone X which bends backward on the bottom which allowed Apple to place their display drivers behind the screen and the visible area is pushed right up the edge, so that’s why iPhone’s bezels are symmetrical.
One more info is experts expecting that Android Pie will support notch display but we don’t know how it will work we need to wait till the end of 2018 or the beginning of 2019. Since now apps don’t know how to support notch screen and everyone changing the layout but they can’t keep different layout for different mobiles.
The most expected features related to notch screen in Android Pie is it can give clock on to the left side since clock needs large space and other features like WiFi, vibrate, DND and Tower options can come and go according to user settings.
